L’estate reggae della costa jonica entra nel vivo. Dopo il party di apertura del Dutty Summer, la rassegna che ogni anno ospita artisti di calibro nazionale e internazionale, il team di Catanzaro Alleanza è lieto di presentare l’evento dancehall della stagione estiva: ReggaeReggae I-Shence (It) vs Supersonic (De). Mercoledì 12 agosto al Bahia beach club di Soverato andrà in scena una vera e propria battaglia musicale che coinvolgerà due delle più note crew europee. Una sfida musicale a colpi di dubplate che vede da una parte i guerrieri europei per eccellenza, da Berlino Supersonic, e dall’altra un sound italiano che da anni rappresenta la penisola in Europa e nel mondo, da Perugia I-Shence.
Ma che cos è un soundclash?
Per chi non è un cultore della musica giamaicana questo termine può non voler dire nulla, per chi ne mastica invece, è una parte fondamentale imprescindibile della cultura dell’isola caraibica. I Sound System, ora diffusi in tutto il mondo, nascono negli anni cinquanta nei ghetti di Kingston, in Giamaica, dove con generatori, piatti, e impianti musicali colossali, si spargeva musica e vibrazioni per le strade. Il sound clash prende piede a causa della forte rivalità tra vari sound system che tentavano di accaparrarsi il maggior quantitativo di “massive” (pubblico) possibile. Si tratta di una sfida musicale tra due o più “sound system” , in cui vince chi riesce a conquistare la maggior parte del pubblico, che fa da giudice, attraverso grida, accendini, fischietti e quant’altro! Le armi degli sfidanti sono i dischi, i “dubplates” (brani registrati dagli artisti in esclusiva per le crew stesse, o brani specifici che diffamano l’altro contendente), la capacità nel mixare e creare una sequenza di brani e gli “speech” al microfono.
I-Shence, anche conosciuto come “The Italian Beretta”, nasce nel 1996 e porta per la prima volta il reggae a Perugia. Nel 1999 dopo tre anni di dancehall nel capoluogo umbro, I-Shence organizza la prima di quattro edizioni del Natural Mystic Reggae Festival al Monte Peglia, il quale ospita grandi stelle della musica reggae fra cui Luciano, Morgan Heritage, Anthony B, The I-Threes e Bushman. Vede inoltre svolgersi il primo sound clash europeo in Italia in cui One Love sfida Stand Tall da Parigi. Il 27 settembre 2001 I-Shence partecipa al suo primo sound clash nel quale si scontra con Taverna sound da Aosta al Top-a-Top (Roma) e torna a casa vittorioso. Dal 2001 in poi il sound di Perugia si concentra nella promozione di molti eventi che favoriranno ulteriormente la crescita della scena reggae perugina; si afferma così una delle yard più calde d’Italia la quale vede passare per Perugia sound system e artisti internazionali fra cui Rodigan, Pow Pow, Killamanjaro, Soundquake, One Love insieme a Sugar Minott e Tristan Palmer. Nel 2002 prende forma un nuovo Festival nel centro di Perugia: l’Umbria Reggae Festival. Nella prima edizione si esibiscono artisti del calibro di Sizzla, Buju Banton e I Wailers; nella seconda (2003) artisti quali Barrington Levy, Morgan Heritage e per la seconda volta Buju Banton. Nel 2004 I-Shence partecipa a tre sound clash, tra cui uno in Francia contro Subionic (UK) e Guiding Star (FR) il quale si conclude purtroppo con una sconfitta; gli altri due si svolgono in Italia, uno nella città di Bologna contro Northern Lights; l’altro in Salento contro General Palma, uscendo vincitore in entrambi. Nel 2006 si portano a casa lo Spanish Clash ’06 contro Shaolin (Ger) e Fire Voice (U.K.). Il 2006 è un anno molto fortunato per I-Shence, infatti, dopo aver vinto il clash in Spagna si classificano secondi allo storico clash italiano “4th FarEast X-Mas War Clash” a Padova arrivando al Tune fi Tune con Villada e in seguito vengono invitati ad esibirsi a Brixton da Sir David Rodigan. Nel 2007 I-Shence continua a suonare in tutta Italia e all’estero, suonando per la prima volta anche in Jamaica al Dutty Fridays (Fletchers Land, Kingston) prima di artisti come CD Master, Fire Links, Bounty Killer e Mavado. Il 2008 inizia molto bene per i “freghi” di Perugia che partecipano al “Call the undertaker clash” contro i berlinesi City Lock, a Mannheim in Germania, vincendo tutti i 3 rounds e il dub fi dub. Nel 2009 I-Shence continua a portare in giro il suo nome tra penisola, Europa e medio oriente, infatti hanno avuto l’occasione di esibirsi su due consolle diverse in Israele.
Supersonic
It all started with a pack of mix cds named Supersonic in the summer of 1998 that Panza (selector),Supersonic’s head honcho released all by himself. By that time he was not even thinking about running a soundsystem, dub cutting, participating in soundclashes or touring the world. He just wanted to share his new found love for reggae and dancehall music through his mixes. Things started to develop and Panza soon saw himself selecting at various clubs in his hometown Berlin where he met Spider (mc) the following year. The two played their first gigs together and became the core of the soundsystem as it still exists today. Since Spider spent several years of his childhood in Trinidad and grew up listening to reggae he was destined to become the mc for the sound. Later that year both linked up with Uzi, a soundclash enthusiast and tape collector who took care of sound fx and administrative issues. In 2001 Sonic won the much acclaimed “Kill Or Be Killed” newcomer clash and instantly gained ground among the German soundclash fraternity. The sound became a force to be reckoned with, toured all over Germany, played major festivals and participated in soundclashes. The mixes got spread worldwide and Supersonic was in demand both home and abroad. The real breakthrough in the clash arena came with “Riddim Clash 2004” where Supersonic buried three opponents at Munich’s Muffathalle. At this point there was no holding back and Supersonic became one of Europe’s leading forces in soundclash. By 2005 Supersonic recruited Danny Fyah, former mc on Fire Sound from Dresden who started supporting Spider on the mic at various juggling dances. Only one year later it was Jr. Blender, the remix icon from Hamburg who joined the crew as a new selector. He was the perfect addition to Panza and pushed the sound in new directions while his productions skills paved the way for future milestones. He is also one of the creative masterminds behind the successful So Shifty project that came to prominence in 2009. With almost ten years in the business and a growing interest in own productions it was just a question of time before Supersonic would release their own selection. By 2007 the first riddim selection named “Devils Angel” got released with international recording artists such as Bunji Garlin, Luciano, Natural Black and Junior Kelly just to name a few. Internationally Supersonic made a mark in Gambia in 2008 and gained lots of new followers and please long time fans while on tour throughout the country. The following year it was time for the sophomore selection called “Message To You Rudie” produced by Blender, who created an homage to the good old days of rocksteady. The line-up featured Bunji Garlin, his wife Fay-Ann Lyons, General Degree, Mojo Morgan and Marlon Asha among others. On top of that Supersonic played in Brooklyn, New York for the first time and had the crowd in frenzy at “Global Clash”. The custom built Super C was the tune for the night and Supersonic took home another trophy. Only one year later Supersonic defeated Mighty Crown in Holland at “War Ina East” in Club Atak. In both 2010 and 2011 Supersonic successfully toured Japan, on the return trip alongside Yardbeat and L.P. International. During their trips to the Far East Supersonic played major cities such as Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe and many more. On the production side Supersonic came across with the third release entitled “Knock Out Riddim” again produced by Junior Blender. The much acclaimed dancehall riddim featured Ward 21, Degree, of course Bunji Garlin and many others. In 2012 Arno and Chris, formerly with Soundvibration joined Supersonic and became the new generation of the sound adding a different approach on things while sharing the same passion for the music. With three selectors and three mcs, Supersonic can cater all kind of events on any given day, delivering all styles reggae music has to offer.
